Most disposal problems come down to a handful of things. If it hums but won’t spin, something is jammed between the flywheel and the grind ring, or the motor is starting to seize. If it does nothing at all, the reset button on the bottom may have tripped, or the problem is the switch, the outlet or the breaker.
With leaks, where the water shows up tells you a lot. A leak at the top usually means the seal at the sink flange has failed, which is fixable. A leak at the side is usually the dishwasher hose or the drain connection. A leak from the very bottom of the unit means the seal inside has worn through, and at that point the disposal needs replacing.

Garbage Disposal Installation and Replacement
Swapping a disposal looks simple on paper. In practice, the mounting ring on the old one rarely matches the new one, the drain arm sits at a different height, and the old unit may have been hardwired instead of plugged in. That’s usually where DIY installs stall out.
When we install one, we replace the mounting assembly so it seals properly to your sink, line up the drain so it won’t leak or back up, connect the dishwasher, and get the power right, whether that’s an outlet under the sink or a hardwired connection. Then we run water through it and check every joint before we leave.
Size matters too. A 1/3 horsepower unit is fine for light use, but a household that cooks a lot is better off with 1/2 or 3/4 HP. They grind faster and jam less. We’ll help you choose if you’re not sure.
And some things should never go down a disposal, however good it is: grease, bones, big batches of potato peels, and stringy stuff like celery or corn husks. Most of the clogs we clear started with one of those.

What are common signs my garbage disposal needs repair?
Humming without spinning, loud grinding or rattling, water leaking under the sink, slow draining, a smell that won’t go away, or a reset button that keeps tripping.
Can you install a new garbage disposal if mine is beyond repair?
Yes. If it’s leaking from the bottom, the motor is failing, or a repair would cost close to what a new one does, we’ll replace it, usually on the same visit.
Why does my disposal hum but not spin?
Something is stuck between the flywheel and the grind ring, often a fruit pit, a bone or a piece of glass. Turn the switch off and cut the power first. Many units have a hex socket on the bottom you can turn with the small Allen wrench that came with it to free the jam. If it still hums afterward, the motor may be on its way out.
Do you fix leaks coming from under the sink or disposal?
Yes. We find where the water is actually coming from, whether that’s the disposal, the drain, the dishwasher line or the sink itself, and fix that.
How long does a garbage disposal typically last?
Usually 8 to 15 years, depending on the model and how hard it gets used. Higher-horsepower units with stainless parts tend to last longer.

Why is my garbage disposal leaking from the bottom?
Almost always, the seal inside the unit has worn out and water is getting past it. That isn’t really repairable. The fix is a new disposal.
What should I do if my garbage disposal won't turn on?
Look for the small red reset button on the bottom of the unit and press it. Then check the breaker, and make sure it’s plugged in if it’s the plug-in type. If it still won’t do anything, the switch, outlet or motor has failed, and we can figure out which one.
