What Code Correction Actually Involves
Most people find us one of two ways. A city inspector failed a job and left a correction notice. Or a home inspector’s report came back during a sale with a page of electrical items on it. Either way, you’ve got a list and usually a deadline.
We go through the list item by item, check each one in person, and fix what’s there. Some of it is quick: a missing cover plate, a reversed outlet, a GFCI where the code calls for one. Some takes longer, like correcting grounding, replacing wire that’s too small for its breaker, or untangling a panel somebody else modified.
When we’re finished, you get a written record of what we corrected. That comes in handy when a buyer, lender or insurance company wants proof the work was done.

Electrical Panel Upgrades & Replacement
Double-tapped breakers, missing breaker blanks, a panel that’s full or no longer manufactured. A lot of code corrections end at the panel, and sometimes replacing it is the cleanest fix.

Common Electrical Code Violations We Fix
Some violations turn up on almost every report we see. Double-tapped breakers, where two wires share a terminal built for one. Missing GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoors. Three-prong outlets with no ground wire behind them. Splices sitting loose in the attic instead of inside a junction box.
Others come from old DIY work or an addition someone wired years ago. Wire that’s undersized for its breaker. A subpanel that isn’t grounded and bonded properly. Boxes and storage piled so close to the panel there’s no room to work on it safely.
Newer equipment has its own rules. An EV charger, a generator or a big HVAC upgrade can push a panel past its rating, and inspectors check for that.

What is an electrical code inspection?
It’s a check of your wiring, panel, outlets and safety devices against the electrical code your city enforces. The city does one whenever permitted work is done. A home inspector does a lighter version during a sale. We can also do one for you before either of those happens.
When should homeowners schedule a code inspection?
Before you sell, after you buy, before a big remodel, or after someone did electrical work in the house without a permit. Problems are a lot easier to fix on your schedule than on a closing deadline.
What types of issues are commonly found during code inspections?
Double-tapped breakers, missing GFCI or AFCI protection, ungrounded outlets, open splices, reversed polarity, and wire that’s too small for its breaker.
Will the inspection disrupt my home or require wall openings?
Usually not much. Most corrections happen at the panel, outlets and junction boxes. If we do need to open a wall or ceiling, we’ll tell you first and keep the opening as small as we can.
Do you handle permits for code corrections?
Yes. If a correction needs a permit, we pull it and schedule the inspection.
How long does code correction work usually take?
A handful of items off a home inspection report can often be done in a day. A longer correction list, or anything involving the panel, takes more time, partly depending on when the city can come inspect.
What if my electrical system doesn’t pass inspection?
The inspector notes what’s still wrong. We fix it and schedule the re-inspection. Most re-inspections are for small items.
Why is electrical code compliance important for homeowners?
Code violations are usually fire or shock risks, not paperwork. They can also hold up a home sale, cause trouble with your insurance, or keep the city from signing off on other work.

What is a double-tapped breaker, and why is it a code violation?
It’s two wires connected under one breaker terminal that’s only designed to hold one. They can loosen over time, overheat and arc. The fix is usually a pigtail or giving the second wire its own breaker.
